Mystical and modernist
The owner, a Catalan woman who married her husband from the region of Aragon, tells me that the Peninsular Hostel became the “Aragones” when they acquired it in 1970. It was renovated with absolute respect to the way it was a hundred years ago. Through the basement, the hostel was connected with the Church of Sant Agustí and the rooms and the interior patio were part of the convent of Sant Agustí which was built around 1730.
Its interior patio with three floors of open galleries and balconies it is likely to have been the cloister of the neoclassical convent. When entering the cloister, there is a huge burst of light that comes through the large skylight, enhancing its pastel green and cream colors, the little marble fountain, the old piano, the planter and the architectonic features ... without a doubt it takes us back in time to a magical world.
Interestingly, the rooms of the guests of the Hotel Peninsular had historically been the cells of the monks who had been part of the Augustinian order.
Other vestiges remain from that time, such as a secret underground tunnel that connected the Church of San Agustí, located in the back street, with the monks' chambers. Such tunnel is thought to have been used in troubled times in the past.
The building was secularized and converted into a hotel in 1876. It was during the Universal Exposition, which was held in Barcelona, that it emerged as a successful hotel business.

Great value for money .... The hotel is perfectly located only two blocks from La Rambla ... the place is spotless, a good continental breakfast, the customer service provided by the staff is excellent.
Excellent service and the proximity to Las Ramblas (Liceu) and Passeig de Gracia is fantastic. Warm atmosphere and a very nice patio. Now all rooms have got Wifi and air conditioning. We came a few years ago and not all rooms had it then. We will definitely come back!

Unbeatable price. The facilities were good. Breakfast was also OK. The location is one of its strongest points. Lovely staff, hotel with plenty of character but very clean and in the heart of the city, it has a beautiful patio or courtyard!
